Recess Learning with Campaign Signs

I know that you seen many outdoor campaign posters like this with the upcoming election:

After the election, all these signs are removed and thrown away,
so make use of this valuable resource and create this activity.

During lunch recess time, work with you lunchroom supervisor or a  parent volunteer to reinforce learning that is happening in your classroom.
First, glue a piece of paper over the front and back of the sign.  Write or glue on a written question and answer on the sign. For this example, let's imagine that your students have been studying addition doubles plus one or two.

Student begins at the start and softly dribbles the ball  to the first sign. The student calls out the answer, then waits
to see if the answer is correct.

A student standing next to the sign tells the student
 if they are correct.
  If they are correct,
then they softly kick the ball through the legs of the sign.
Student continues through all signs in the order
 specified by the teacher.
great fun + exercise + learning = a great activity

Leave a comment and let me know what you think of my idea.

Family Math Night at the Local Grocery Store ACTIVITIES

Mary Bauer recently commented on my post about the Family Math Night at a local grocery store:
"We have a local grocery store that would participate. What kind of activities do families do?':
You can see that I have created activity sheets for Grades Kindergarten through 6th Grade.

Here is an example of the Kindergarten Activity sheet:
The activities at each grade level are based on the Common Core Standards.
I've taken into consideration that your local grocery store may be different from the one in my area.

Since the format of my packet is in PowerPoint, the pages are be editable , so you can easily change the wording of the document.

Do you want to host a school event that will draw a large crowd?
Then use the suggestions provided on the page titled,
"Suggestions to Promote the Event."

What if too many people attend?
Read my suggestions about creating Estimation Alley to have attendees do before entering the Event.

The entire Math Night kit is NOW available in my Teacher Pay Teacher store. Click to take a look at the 39 page packet.

Here is another example from the packet:
(One school had a volunteer near the meat department with a set of calculators to assist the students as they calculated the answers for Number 2 on this sheet.)

Also included in the packet is a checklist of all the tasks that the Organizing Committee needs to do to prepare for the Math Night Event.

Parents complete this form at the end of the night to praise their children as they recognize mathematical skills used by their children.

Parent Back-to-School Night Multigrade PowerPoint

Template PowerPoint to be Personalized by Individual Teachers
This is a PowerPoint presentation that I created for the multigrade teachers in our district for their Back-to-School Night. It is a template that they can personalize for their own class. This presentation helps them explain what their multigrade class will be like. It discusses research about multigrade classrooms briefly, shows how our district's instructional materials have been adapted for their children, and address some of their concerns about multigrade verus single grade classes.

You can view this Powerpoint in Google Doc by clicking HERE

I'm not sure it can be personalized if you download it, as I'm new at sharing a PowerPoint from Google Doc.  I just wanted you to see it for ideas of what you might do for your parents on Back-to-School or Curriculum Nights for Parents.

Our teachers receive multi-grade training sessions, and they personalize it in class as we discuss different options available. That's why you see multiple options for teaching math. They choose the way they decide and delete the rest :)

I hope this is helpful.

Deborah
